Sculpey rocks my socks!

2 June, 2008 Queen of Spades 1 comment

A dear pixieimpcreaturefriend sent me some Sculpey a while ago, and I’ve been too scared to use it. (“What if I wreck it?”; “What if I can’t think of anything to make out of it?”; “What if I can’t work with it?”, etc.). Tonight, after a less-than-happy and short gaming session I decided to play with some Sculpey. Didn’t get that much done, but OMG it is so cool! Sooo easy to mould, easy to make smooth, and it’s strong, not crumbly like crappy air-dry stuff. It remains to be seen how well I can bake it in my oven, and what it’s like after I’ve baked it.

I apologise for the crappy pic of the face and the scroll. The second pic was purposely distorted and I posted it cos I think it looks cool.

I maded some stuffs

Ehh…I’m tired. We just had a long weekend, but although I feel quite relaxed, I don’t feel all that well-rested. I got a cold last week so I haven’t been sleeping that well. I’ve been working hard to finish a set of four clay eggcups for my parents and grandparents for this weekend. I did finish them, taking photos along the way, as can be seen below.

I made them out of air-dry clay, which is fine for more generic pieces without a lot of detail. I glued the bits together when the clay was dry, then filled in the gaps with more clay, sanded them until very smooth, sealed them using Jo Sonja All Purpose Sealer, then painted them using Jo Sonja paints (three coats, slightly diluted using Clear Glaze Medium, to get a solid colour), and then finally applied three coats of Matte Varnish. I added a tiny bit of Pearl White to the last coat of varnish to get a bit of gloss.

Mood Organ

So, a few weeks ago I was thinking of the mood organ from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (DADoES). Basically it’s a machine with a dial, and you can punch in the number of the mood you want to be in. There’s even a random option, for when you’re feeling indecisive about your mood. In the book the organ is not described, I don’t think, so I got to thinking – what would this organ look like?

So I started doodling, and this is what I came up with:

And then I bought some el cheapo air-dry clay, since I haven’t worked with clay in a long time and hence didn’t want to splurge, and made this:
Mood organ
This is what it’ll look like when put together, roughly, except I’m planning to glaze it and paint it bright yellow and purple.

Mood organ dial
This is what the dial looks like at the moment, though I’m not particularly pleased with this – air-dry clay is very hard to use when you want to get good detail. I might have to think of a way to redo this disc.

I’ve sanded down the pieces, but not totally – I kind of like the “wrinkled flesh” look. Next, I have to get some Jo Sonja glaze medium and some bright yellow and purple paint, and go nuts.
